Using Shoulder Taps as an Assessment




Shoulder taps are a great anti rotatory core stability exercise and plank variation. I generally prescribe them after a patient is pain free as the pain is most likely affecting their motor control.

If they're pain free and still feel significant asymmetry, it could be due to weakness or inhibition in an upper or lower body rolling pattern. In this video, I go over the correctives to fire those patterns and cement stability in this exercise.

If the patient perception
  • is their upper body is falling forward, correct with banded UE elevation and ipsilateral trunk rotation
  • is their lower body falling forward, correct with single leg bridges
Re-test shoulder taps and perception/effort with unilateral stability.
