Sleep hygiene

  • What is best mattress/pillow?
  • Whatever is comfortable!

Promotion of “anti-inflammatory diet”
  • Minimizing processed food, added sugar, alcohol, red meat
  • There can be many things to address, so what is lowest barrier of entry for patient?
  • Reasons why people don’t eat healthy:
  • Time, perceived cost, don’t know where to begin, don’t fully understand impact of not eating healthy, especially for msk issues: tendon health, healing, reducing inflammation

Impact of insomnia on physical and mental health
  • History of insomnia usually precedes onset of chronic pain, mental health disorders like anxiety, depression, dementia and other lifestyle diseases like certain cancers and cardiovascular disease

Fad diets vs sustainable nutrition plan
  • Most of the more popular nutrition plans have most factors in common (plant-based, paleo, keto, mediterranean, etc)
  • Emphasize eating whole foods including lots of vegetables, fruit, nuts/seeds, whole grains, legumes, lean meat, some dairy
  • Minimize highly processed food, added sugar, alcohol
